Jorge Polanco’s difficult first season with the New York Mets is officially over after the veteran infielder was ruled out for the remainder of 2026 with a recurring left ankle problem.
Interim manager Andy Green announced Wednesday that Polanco was placed on the 10-day injured list and will undergo surgery in the near term. The decision came after a recent MRI showed that the 32-year-old could no longer continue playing through the pain.
Green explained that Polanco had spent months dealing with significant discomfort, which had begun affecting his lower-body mechanics at the plate.

“He played through significant pain,” Green said, explaining that the issue had reached a point where Polanco could no longer get freedom from the pain.
The decision ends a frustrating season for Polanco, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract with New York during the offseason. He appeared in just 37 games and posted a .148/.201/.230 slash line with two home runs and two doubles in 84 plate appearances.
Polanco also missed three months earlier in the season because of right wrist and ankle complications. After returning in July, he went 0-for-26, further highlighting the struggles he had while trying to play through the injury.
His physical limitations also restricted his defensive opportunities. Polanco was used primarily as a designated hitter and logged only 20 innings in the field at first base.
With Polanco now sidelined, the Mets will have to continue adjusting their infield. Jared Young is expected to handle first-base duties while Mark Vientos works his way back from a hand fracture.
Vientos is nearing a rehab assignment, which could provide the Mets with some needed help down the stretch.
For Polanco, however, the focus now shifts to recovering from the ankle surgery. After a season defined by injuries and offensive struggles, resolving the lingering issue gives him a chance to return healthy for 2027.
