Utility man Oswald Peraza came in to replace Moncada after his exit. before leaving the game, Moncada was 0-for-2 with a strikeout before leaving.
Moncada has struggled with injury all season, taking two trips to the injured list so far this season. He first went on IL in April with a right thumb sprain, spending a month on the sidelines.
The second instance came in June, where he also spent a month on the bench with right knee inflammation. The third baseman also struggled with injury in 2024, playing just 12 games over the course of the season.
When healthy, Moncada has been great at the plate for the Halos. He has a .807 OPS this season, which would lead the team if he were qualified, along with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs. He hasn't had an .800 or higher OPS season since 2019, when he received MVP votes for the Chicago White Sox.
Moncada's contract expires at the end of the season, and the Angels are not expected to bring the slugger back for another season in the Big A despite his offensive production.
With Moncada potentially missing time, the Angels could move some players around to see who will make the biggest impact at third base in 2026.Potential answers are Peraza and — perhaps more interestingly — Denzer Guzman, who the Angels called up ahead of Saturday's game.
Guzman, 21, is currently filling in at shortstop for the Angels' Zach Neto, however has dabbled in playing third base this season. He is the No. 9 prospect in the organization and ripped up Triple-A pitching during his month at the level this season.
The Angels are in something of a late-season injury crisis, with 14 players on the IL. They'll hope Moncada can continue without a stint on the IL as they try to avoid reaching deeper in their farm system.
Moncada will get a rest day ahead of the Angels' series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. They will hope he can recover well and continue to aid the team offensively for the rest of the season.
