The Angels announced Thursday that left-hander Sammy Peralta and catcher Sebastián Rivero both went unclaimed on waivers and were assigned outright to Triple-A Salt Lake. Both are eligible to elect free agency and will presumably do so.
The 28-year-old Peralta split the 2026 season between the Rockies and Halos, combining for 23 innings with a 6.65 earned run average. He fanned a respectable 20.5% of opponents against a solid 8% walk rate, leading to better reviews from metrics like SIERA (3.96). However, Peralta was quite homer-prone, plunked four of the 112 batters he faced, and was dinged for a brutal .417 average on balls in play, which did him no favors. He’s now pitched in parts of four major league seasons and carries a 5.64 ERA in 68 2/3 frames. The soft-tossing southpaw has averaged 89.1 mph on his four-seamer and 88.8 mph on his sinker during his brief major league stints.
Rivero, 27, took only 57 plate appearances for the Angels, hitting .245/.286/.283. He’s had brief stints as a backup catcher both with Kansas City and Anaheim, totaling 164 major league plate appearances with a .197/.247/.237 slash. He’s never hit much in the minors either, but Rivero is a quality defender who has found himself occasionally pressed into big league action despite being the third or fourth catcher on the depth chart with multiple organizations. Assuming both players do indeed become free agents, they’ll look to catch on as minor league depth with a new team in free agency.
