It was a day of reckoning in MLB as two underperforming franchises made major changes atop their respective organizations.
Earlier in the day, the New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza with the team on pace to miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year. Not to be outdone, the Los Angeles Angels announced later in the day that they are parting ways with their general manager, Perry Minasian, who had been in the position since 2020. Like Mendoza, the move to relieve Minasian was out of the blue, although not completely unexpected.
The Angels are in the midst of another disappointing season, posting a 34-48 record heading into Friday night's action. They sit last in the AL West and are currently 7.0 games back of the division-leading Seattle Mariners. Los Angeles is also 5.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot.
Minasian compiled a 392-500 record during his tenure as the Angels' GM, despite inheriting a lineup that featured both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. This era of the Angels will forever be tainted by both the inability to re-sign Ohtani and the effective squandering of Trout's career. Minasian's reign as GM overlaps with both of these failures, and the refusal to trade Ohtani ahead of free agency significantly set back the Angels' farm system.

With the Angels on track to miss the playoffs for the twelfth consecutive season, the organization finally decided on a new direction. The team named longtime St. Louis Cardinals executive John Mozeliak as the interim general manager. Mozeliak is a highly respected executive who led the Cardinals to ten postseason appearances, including winning the 2011 World Series. Before becoming GM, he oversaw the drafting of both Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina as the team's scouting director.
Mozeliak has a lot of work to do, including deciding on Mike Trout's future with the team. With just over six weeks until the MLB trade deadline, the Angels could be an aggressive seller as they rebuild for the 2027 season.
