Angels Place Struggling Pitcher on the IL

Less than 24 hours after Los Angeles Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said that his rotation spot could be in jeopardy, starter Jack Kochanowicz was placed on the 15-day IL on Sunday.

The decision was made quickly after Kochanowicz had a nightmare outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. The right-hander allowed six consecutive hits to start the game, allowing four earned runs before he recorded his first and only out of the contest. After walking Dalton Rushing, he was replaced by reliever Brent Suter. In all, Kochanowicz was credited with allowing seven runs, six of them earned, en route to his team's 9-2 loss.

The Angels are calling Kochanowicz's injury right elbow inflammation, which could be a cause for his struggles as of late. Kochanowicz has failed to make it through more than four innings in his past three games, allowing 14 earned runs over that span. In 13 starts this year, Kochanowicz has compiled a 2-5 record with a 6.05 ERA and 1.578 WHIP.

Kochanowicz could be the recipient of some poor fielding behind him, as his FIP sits at a more reasonable 4.98 and his xERA is also slightly lower at 5.38. Still, it's hard to find success in MLB when you are allowing more than 5.0 BB/9 and averaging just 6.61 K/9.

The writing was likely on the wall for Kochanowicz after Saturday's performance. Following the game, Suzuki told reporters that the Angels would "talk about it and see what our options are," regarding the pitcher's place in the rotation moving forward. For now, the stint on the 15-day IL buys the Angels some time and allows Kochanowicz to reset some of the mechanics that he said were giving him issues.

In a corresponding move, the Angels have recalled left-handed pitcher Sam Aldegheri from Triple-A Salt Lake City to take Kochanowicz's spot on the roster.
