Yoán Moncada will undergo right knee surgery that will sideline him for at least five weeks. The third baseman’s return to the Los Angeles Angels lineup is in doubt for the rest of the season after the Angels moved him to the 60-day injured list, which keeps him out until at least mid-July.

However, the team did not release full details of the procedure or give a clear timeline for a return beyond the minimum absence window. Francys Romero said in a post on X that Moncada will require surgery after ongoing discomfort limited his ability to play at full strength.

The issue affected him most when he hit from the right side, which led the Angels to reduce his right-handed at-bats before the injury worsened. The injury continues a long-running issue for Moncada, who has dealt with knee problems over the past year.

Moncada has played 29 games this season before he was moved to the injured list. He hit .174 with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs in 86 at-bats, but his production dropped as the season progressed, and the Angels adjusted his workload in an effort to keep him available.

The Angels now face another hole at third base. Donovan Walton has stepped in during recent games, while the team also called up prospect Denzer Guzman from Triple-A to help cover the position.

The roster move gives the Angels short-term depth, but they now lose a veteran bat and defender from their lineup. Moncada seemingly never fully recovered from the right knee issue that cost him five weeks last summer.

The injury has lingered since last year, negatively impacting his performance, especially when batting right-handed. Moncada hasn’t played a full season since 2022, posting a disappointing .189 batting average this year.

The 31-year-old has missed significant time in each of the past four years due to various injuries. That lack of availability has limited his ability to build consistent form at the plate. He finished his 2026 stint with a .189 batting average, a .308 on-base percentage, and a .297 slugging percentage across 130 plate appearance.

Moncada is under a $4 million contract with the Angels in his second season with the team. He will return to free agency in November. His recovery timeline now shapes both his immediate future and his market value, especially if the injury keeps him out for most or all of the remaining season.

The Angels will continue to monitor his recovery after surgery and adjust their infield plans in his absence. For now, the team moves forward without one of its veteran corner infielders as it awaits further medical updates.
