Angels Release Statement After Player Involved in 'Serious Car Accident'
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

A Los Angeles Angels minor league player has reportedly suffered a serious injury from a vehicular accident on Friday.

The club announced the status of Rio Foster, an outfielder in LA's system, just before the team's series opener against the Athletics at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

The statement from Los Angeles read as follows:

"Earlier today, the Angels Organization learned that Rio Foster, a member of our Tri-City affiliate, was a passenger in a serious car accident in Richland, WA. Rio is currently receiving medical care at a local hospital and remains in critical condition. We ask that the entire Angels Community joins our Organization in keeping Rio and his family in their hearts during this difficult time."

Selected by the Angels in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB draft, Foster has been playing in 2025 for the High-A Tri-City Dust Devils in the Northwest League. He has been batting well this year, hitting .267/.407/.439 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs to go along with eight stolen bases through 378 plate appearances and 93 games. Before his stint with the Dust Devils, Foster played for the ACL Angels in the Arizona Complex League and for the Inland Empire 66ers in the California League, both in 2024.

Foster, who was born in Athens, Georgia, just celebrated his 22nd birthday in June. He has been making noise in the minors with his stellar play of late. In fact, he won the NWL Player of the Month award for August.

The Sun Devils even sent out a congratulatory message on Thursday for Foster.

"Rio Foster takes home NWL Player of the Month for August! He batted .333/.456/.656 and led the league in runs (24) and slugging percentage (.656). He finished second in home runs (seven), RBI (23) and OPS (1.112) and was third in on-base percentage (.456). He was fourth in average (.333) and doubles (nine) and was fifth in hits (35). He recorded 10 multi-hit games and set a career high with five hits on August 13 against Eugene."

Angels and baseball fans are sending out their prayers for Foster, with many leaving messages in support of the young player in the comment section of the team's announcement on X.
