Angels release veteran catcher Austin Romine

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim released catcher Austin Romine on Wednesday.

According to Sam Blum of The Athletic, Romine opted out of his contract to become a free agent.

This season, Romine, 33, registered only two hits in nine plate appearances for the Angels.

He played ten games with the Angels' Triple-A affiliate, Salt Lake, batting .273/.368/.394 with a home run and four RBI.

The Angels signed Romine as a free agent on March 13.

An 11-year MLB veteran, Romine has played for the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Angels.

A second-round draft selection by the Yankees in 2007, Romine played eight seasons in New York, primarily as a backup catcher. In 368 games with the Yankees, Romine batted .239/.281/.366 with 25 home runs and 135 RBIs.

Romine has bounced around since leaving the Yankees after the 2019 season. He played 37 games for the Tigers in 2020 and 28 games with the Cubs in 2021 before joining the Angels this offseason.
