Angels Set to Call-Up Top Prospect

The Los Angeles Angels have gotten great production from recent call-ups Wade Meckler (.340 AVG, .945 OPS) and Donovan Walton (.250 AVG) thus far.

Now, it appears another promotion could provide a spark for the Angels' lineup.

Following Sunday's 13-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Halos' No. 7 prospect, Denzer Guzmán, is expected to be called up, according to Baseball America's Taylor Blake Ward.

Guzmán was scratched from Sunday's lineup with Triple-A Salt Lake. Meanwhile, Vaughn Grissom did not play in the Dodgers series after sustaining left side tightness during batting practice on Friday. Manager Kurt Suzuki is hopeful Grissom can avoid an injured list stint.

Guzmán made his MLB debut last September, but struggled in his brief stint. He slashed .190/.209/.357 with two home runs and three RBIs over 13 games. More troublingly, he recorded 22 strikeouts and drew just one walk, resulting in a 51.2 percent strikeout rate.

The 22-year-old shortstop did not make the Angels' Opening Day roster this year. However, he has enjoyed a stellar campaign with Triple-A Salt Lake in 2026.

In 58 games this season, Guzmán owns a .336/.403/.571 slash line with 12 home runs, 57 RBI, and nine stolen bases. Perhaps most encouraging, though, is his improved plate discipline. Guzmán has drawn 27 walks while striking out 48 times. His 10.1 percent walk rate and 17.9 percent strikeout rate are encouraging improvements from his previous major league stint.

The Angels are currently dealing with their fair share of injuries in the lineup. Yoán Moncada (right knee inflammation) and Jorge Soler (left oblique strain) remain on the 10-day injured list. Meanwhile, Zach Neto (whiplash) and Nolan Schanuel (left ankle inflammation) returned this weekend. Furthermore, a potential injured list stint for Grissom may be in the cards.

While Neto has returned and remains the Angels' primary shortstop, Guzmán has also seen time (14 games) at third base with Triple-A Salt Lake this season.

Grissom's injury could provide Guzmán with an opportunity to prove he is ready for the major leagues and stay there. It would also allow the Angels to continue evaluating one of their promising young players at the big-league level.

Los Angeles is 8-7 since Meckler and Walton were called up together on May 22. Guzmán will look to continue the Angels' recent success.

The Angels (25-41) sit in last place in the AL West and own the worst record in the American League.

Los Angeles returns home to begin a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Monday at 9:38 pm ET.
