Another Mets star drawing significant trade interest

The New York Mets' tough season goes on, and barring a miracle, they will be sellers at the Aug. 3 deadline.

The Mets are even considering moving on from star shortstop Francisco Lindor, so only a handful of pieces might be safe.

Considering that, multiple teams might be keeping an eye on veteran starter Clay Holmes.

According to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, interest in Holmes has ramped up in the past couple of days.

“He has shot up this list because teams' interest in him runs deep — and the only reason he's not higher than 90% to go is due to the possibility of him remaining in New York on a contract extension,” Passan explained.

Even so, Holmes' body of work and experience would immediately make him one of the top trade chips if the Mets do consider moving him.

“If he does move, Holmes is a playoff-caliber starter for all of the teams with interest, a groundball machine whose minuscule home run rate would play especially well in the postseason,” Passan added.

Holmes has outplayed his contract in Queen so far. He's currently out with an injury, but he's inching closer to a return after completing his rehab assignment in the minors.

Before suffering a fibula fracture, Holmes had been one of the few bright spots for the Mets, logging a 4-4 record with a 2.39 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 52.2 innings of work, per Baseball Reference.

And with teams like the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays reportedly looking for help on the mound, they probably wouldn't mind giving Holmes a lofty contract extension if they manage to get their hands on him.
