Anthony Banda enjoyed two highly successful years with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The left-handed reliever helped the Dodgers to a World Series title in each season. However, Banda was designated for assignment ahead of spring training before the Minnesota Twins acquired him in exchange for international bonus pool money.
Reliving the experience of learning about his trade away from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Anthony Banda said he was shellshocked and completely lost for words. Banda could not believe the club DFA’d him, even though he was expecting a trade move down the road. He sensed Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes was also sad to cut him from the team.
“I couldn’t get any words out—I was so shocked,” Anthony Banda said on the Foul Territory podcast this week. “I wasn’t shocked, maybe in the sense of a potential trade at some point. There are a lot of lefties that are really talented and stuff. Just the whole DFA process was a shocker to me.

“I could tell Gomes was not happy in the sense of wanting to be on that end of the phone call. But he just let me know, and that was it. He told me he’d reach back in a couple of days and go from there. There wasn’t very much exchange.”
Banda is entering his 10th year in the MLB, having previously represented eight different organizations. His spell with the Dodgers was by far the best period of his career up till now.
Despite an unceremonious exit from the team, Anthony Banda harbors no ill feelings towards the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, he heaped praise upon the Dodgers for the manner in which they operate every facet of the organization.
“You can’t take that very personally. At the end of the day, there are some great people over there,” Anthony Banda said. “They’re amazing—they take care of families. They care. So, you can’t take the business aspect of them making moves or doing it the way they run the ship.

“They were doing that well before I got there. So, the way I look at it is I was extremely grateful. For one, they’d given me the opportunity to have those special moments that we had. And two, you’re not owed anything in this game. So, take what you can get and keep moving forward,” Anthony Banda continued.
The veteran southpaw will be an important piece for new Minnesota Twins manager Derek Shelton. The Twins traded all their top relief pitchers at the trade deadline last year. He will be one of three lefty relievers in their bullpen alongside Tyler Rogers and Kody Fuderburk.
