Anthony Rendon & Alex Cobb Out with Hip Injuries

With teams now reporting to Spring Training, we’re getting information on which players are hurt and expected to miss time to start the year. The Angels announced that Anthony Rendon is dealing with another significant injury. Meanwhile in Detroit, Alex Cobb has his own injury issue, months after he underwent hip surgery.

The Angels front office confirmed Anthony Rendon will need hip surgery. The decision will keep him out “long-term.”

It’s yet another blow for Rendon, who signed a massive seven-year, $245MM deal with the Angels. That deal came after he won the World Series with Washington back in 2019. Rendon has never played more than 58 games in a season since signing that deal. However, the 34-year-old did play 52 of 60 contests in the shortened 2020 campaign.

With Rendon out, the Angels will look towards in-house options. Luckily, the Angels do have one notable one, in ex-White Sox Yoan Moncada. Moncada signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles (AL) before Spring Training.

Moncada, as we noted earlier this month, has dealt with his own injury troubles. However, the switch-hitter has pop and fits at third, making him a solid fill-in for most, if not, all of the 2025 season.

As for Alex Cobb, the right-hander is expected to miss the start of 2025 thanks to left hip inflammation. The Tigers signed Cobb, who underwent left hip surgery this past offseason, to a one-year deal worth $15MM in December.

Cobb missed most of 2024, only throwing 16.1 IP in the Majors last season with Cleveland.

The Tigers brought back Jack Flaherty a few weeks earlier, giving Detroit some flexibility for how the team could line up their 2025 rotation. Right now, their tentative rotation includes Flaherty, Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, plus the likes of Keider Montero, Casey Mize, and Jackson Jobe fighting for the final two spots.

In other injury-related news, the Pirates will be without Spencer Horwitz for the next few weeks thanks to wrist surgery recovery.
