Anthony Volpe gets booed by Yankees fans after messing up bunt

The season from hell continues for New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe.

During Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium in New York, N.Y., Volpe came up to the plate in the fifth inning with runners on first and second and nobody out. Volpe was called on to lay down a sacrifice bunt but failed to execute the task properly.

On a 2-1 pitch, Volpe went out of the zone to bunt at an inside offering by Detroit’s Casey Mize. Volpe ultimately popped up the bunt, and it was easily caught by Tigers third baseman Colt Keith for a wasted first out.

The Yankee Stadium faithful immediately began booing Volpe over the botched sacrifice. Here is the video.

It didn’t get any better for the Yankees from there either. Though the game was tied 2-2 at the time of Volpe’s miscue, the Tigers scored nine runs on the Yankees in just the seventh inning alone and went on to win 12-2.

As for the 24-year-old Volpe, his 2025 campaign continues to be a trainwreck. While Volpe has managed to produce 19 home runs, 70 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases, he is now hitting a career-low .206 and has been regularly batting in the bottom third of the order (sometimes even as low as No. 9).

In the field, Volpe also leads the American League with 18 errors this season. Yankees fans have not at all been pleased with his play, and Volpe’s father even got profane in the stands during a game this summer after hearing heckles directed at the shortstop.
