The timelines couldn’t be more exciting. Azzi Fudd stormed into the limelight as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, while James Wood is out here torching pitchers with a monster April for the Washington Nationals.

It’s the kind of crossover fans love. Basketball royalty meets baseball’s rising force. And when old photos and shared history started popping back up, the internet had one obvious question: What’s really going on between these two?

Here’s the truth: they’re not related. No family ties or hidden connections, but simply a long-standing friendship that goes way deeper than most realize. As per MLB, their bond dates back to their time at St. John’s College High School, where they spent two years together before James Wood transferred to IMG Academy.

“I think that’s just a crazy flex to say, ‘I’m watching my friend, the guy I went to prom with, he’s playing professional baseball, he’s watching me.’ So it’s super cool checking on each other, making sure we’re doing well,” she said. “I played with his sister, our parents have known each other for years, so we have a great connection.”

Since then, both have taken off, Fudd dominating at UConn and Wood rising through the MLB ranks, but they’ve never lost touch.

How Azzi Fudd and James Wood Built Their Connection?

Back in school, the connection was already tight. Fudd even played alongside Wood’s sister, while their families built a strong bond over the years. Then came the prom story. James Wood literally flew back after transferring just so neither of them had to show up solo.
