The New York Yankees were one of the biggest losers of the Winter Meetings. At least, that's how the fans feel after watching them stay put.
General manager Brian Cashman acknowledged that other teams were reluctant to trade with them, and the team has preached patience about upgrading the roster.
However, FanSided's Robert Murray reports that it's not just that other teams are asking the Yankees to overpay for their trade targets, but that Cashman also seems to be low-balling the players he's reached out to.
“The Yankees are trying for right-handed bats and pitching. They remain open to Cody Bellinger. But the signals from New York are that they are making offers and the teams and free agents aren’t liking them," Murray wrote. "There is plenty of time to upgrade the roster before spring training. But if Bellinger signs elsewhere, the pressure will be on Brian Cashman even more to get this right.”
A team once known for throwing money away is now apparently trying to be more conservative, and while there's nothing wrong with that, the Yankees are still the Yankees.
Their reputation precedes them, and both teams and players will always demand a little more from the Pinstripers, knowing that they might end up caving in and signing checks.
It's been nearly two decades since the team's last championship, but despite the fans' desperation, it seems the front office will continue to take a cautious approach to free agent spending.
