Yankees facing competition for Freddy Peralta

The New York Yankees didn't do anything at the Winter Meetings, at least in terms of closing deals.

GM Brian Cashman admitted that other teams were reluctant to make trades with them, and it might be a while before they make a move.

However, that doesn't mean they're not actively trying to improve the team. According to a report by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Bronx Bombers are one of multiple teams trying to get their hands on Freddy Peralta.

Multiple teams are keeping tabs on Freddy Peralta

"The Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros are among the teams in on Peralta, according to people familiar with the Brewers’ discussions," the report read.

The Yankees have a big need for help on the mound. Aces Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon will miss the start of the season, and Clarke Schmidt will be out all year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Max Fried and Cam Schlittler will do most of the heavy lifting, with Luis Gil and Will Warren as the projected No. 3 and No. 4.

That's where Peralta could come in handy. He's coming off posting the lowest ERA of his career (2.70) and was an NL Cy Young candidate for most of the season.

He's been a true workhorse, starting at least 30 games for the third consecutive season, and with the Yankees struggling with durability, that's the type of player they should keep in mind.

Peralta will make just $8 million next season, which is yet another reason why so many teams are keeping an eye on him.

But after so many years of being good, not great, Aaron Boone's team will have to get back to its old ways and make a statement by outbidding the competition.
