After signing a one-year, $11 million contract to join the Boston Red Sox last offseason, reliever Aroldis Chapman is in the midst of a career resurgence.
Through his first 57 appearances with the Red Sox, Chapman has a 1.04 ERA with 26 saves and a 0.673 WHIP in 52 innings pitched. Furthermore, he has not given up a hit in his last 14 appearances, and he was named an All-Star this season for the first time since 2021.
The Cuban native had been solid in his last few years, but it looked like he lost a step, especially in comparison to his prime seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. However, Chapman has bounced back in a major way this season, and he is playing a crucial role in Boston's aspirations of returning to the postseason.
While Red Sox fans should be happy with Chapman's performance this season, it is also important to remember that he is going to be a free agent once again this offseason. And, if his play is any indication, he could play his way to a bigger contract that Boston may not want to pay. Regardless, the star reliever recently sent a message that should make fans happy ahead of his free agency.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Sox will bring Chapman back in the offseason. However, according to the 37-year-old himself, he is enjoying his time with the team and is "having the time of [his] life" (h/t Jake Roy of NESN).
“Early in my career, I was having fun, but there was so much pressure to get better and better every day,” Chapman said via Flemming’s translation. “You just kind of lose your joy for the game at times because you’re so focused. Now, I find myself coming to the field and every single day, just kinda basking in it and enjoying it, taking my time and slowing down. I’m having the time of my life.”
While he is not their most important player, Chapman has still been crucial to Boston's success this season as they aim to return to the postseason.
The Red Sox have not made a postseason appearance since 2021, and while there is still a lot of baseball remaining, they are in a good spot to buck that trend this season.
With roughly a month left in the season, the Red Sox are 74-60 and own the first AL Wild Card spot. Additionally, they are four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East lead.
Boston has been one of the hottest teams in the MLB over the past few months, and that momentum may carry them to a playoff spot. However, if they can continue their hot streak, not only will they be back in the postseason, but the Red Sox would likely be considered legitimate World Series contenders, and that is an exciting development for the fanbase.
