A’s pitcher had brutal comment about team’s ballpark

The A’s temporary home stadium is not necessarily winning fans in the team’s own clubhouse, at least according to one member of the team.

The A’s are playing at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, Ca. as the team’s new permanent stadium is constructed in Las Vegas. Previously, the park hosted the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, and despite the organization’s best efforts, it still has the feel of a hitter-friendly minor league park.

YES Network reporter Meredith Marakovits spoke to A’s pitcher Luis Severino, a former Yankee, with New York in town for a weekend series. She relayed some comments from Severino on Friday’s broadcast that make it quite clear the pitcher is not particularly enjoying pitching in his new home.

“I spoke to former Yankee Luis Severino in their clubhouse earlier today and he said, ‘This just is not a big league park. It blows out a lot to left field and you really need to pay attention as a pitcher which way the wind is blowing out, because if you’re not trying to attack hitters accordingly, you could really get yourself into a tremendous amount of trouble out there.,'” Marakovits said.

Sutter Health Park feels like a minor league park because it is one. The A’s have done their best to modernize it, but there is not much they can do about the dimensions or the weather conditions. Plus, their efforts to make the facilities more MLB-ready have not been perfect.

Severino shocked many by signing a three-year deal with the A’s in the offseason, meaning he will be pitching at Sutter Health Park for the duration of that contract. In five home starts this season, he has a 5.28 ERA, compared to a 0.95 ERA in three road starts.

One has to wonder if Severino has some regrets about that deal at this point, especially since he has made it quite clear that the A’s were not his first choice in free agency.
