A’s rip three homers, erase 3-run hole to win fourth straight 11-7

The Athletics kept the good spring rolling Tuesday afternoon.

Oakland erased an early three-run hole, blasted three home runs and finished off the White Sox 11-7 at Hohokam Stadium for its fourth straight win. The A’s are now 8-10 this spring, and they did it with another deep offensive day, scoring three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to finally put Chicago away.

Early punch, quick reply

The White Sox jumped out fast.

Chicago scored three in the first, then pushed the lead to 6-3 in the third on Korey Lee’s three-run homer. But the A’s kept answering. Brent Rooker doubled home two runs in the first, and Jeff McNeil followed with an RBI single to tie it at 3-3 before the White Sox struck again.

Rooker got another run back in the third with a solo shot to right-center. He finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and three RBIs.

Back-to-back jolt

The middle innings changed the game.

Nick Kurtz launched his first home run of the spring in the fourth, trimming the deficit to 6-5. One batter later, Shea Langeliers went deep as well, tying the game at 6-6 with back-to-back homers.

Kurtz scored twice and gave the A’s one of their loudest swings of the afternoon. Langeliers added his second homer of the spring, while McNeil finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and pushed his spring average to .364.

Late inning takeover

Oakland finally broke through for good in the seventh.

Tommy White opened the inning with a single, Michael Stefanic followed with one of his own and Cade Marlowe tied the game at 7-7 with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Jared Dickey lined a two-run single to left, and a throwing error let both runs score for a 9-7 lead.

The A’s added two more in the eighth. Leo De Vries started it with a ground-rule double, White knocked him in with a single and Marlowe added another run on a fielder’s choice that turned into a throwing error.

White stays hot

Tommy White keeps making noise.

The former LSU slugger went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and he is still hitting .500 this spring. Stefanic added two hits off the bench, and Marlowe drove in two as the A’s piled up 16 hits.

Henry Bolte went hitless, but he still leads the club in spring hits. Tyler Soderstrom remains the team leader in RBIs.

Bullpen holds from there

The pitching line was not clean early, but the A’s got enough outs once the game settled down.

Jeffrey Springs was tagged for six runs in 2 2/3 innings, though Joey Estes steadied things in the middle and earned the win with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. CD Pelham handled the ninth as Oakland closed out its fourth straight victory.
