The Houston Astros optioned rookie right-hander Alimber Santa to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday following Sunday's 6-5 walk-off loss to the Texas Rangers. Houston enters the All-Star break with a 47-51 record, sitting third in the American League West, three games behind Texas.
Santa returns to Triple-A despite an impressive first stint in the majors. The 23-year-old appeared in 10 games, posting a 1.17 ERA with nine strikeouts, a 0.91 WHIP and just 8 hits allowed across 15.1 innings.
The move appears to be driven by roster flexibility rather than performance. Houston has shuffled its bullpen throughout the season, and Santa remains one of the organization's most dependable depth options heading into the second half.

Before joining the Astros, Santa excelled at Triple-A Sugar Land. He recorded a 1.85 ERA with 29 strikeouts over 24.1 innings, earning his promotion after consistently limiting baserunners and missing bats.
Santa also delivered one of Houston's most memorable moments this season when he recorded the final outs of the club's combined no-hitter against the Rangers in his Major League debut on May 25.
Although the Astros trail the Rangers entering the All-Star break, they remain within striking distance in the division and will continue relying on organizational pitching depth as they push for a stronger second half.
Santa's brief stay in the majors showed he can compete against big league hitters, and his performance gives Houston another quality arm it can turn to whenever bullpen help is needed.
With roster moves expected throughout the second half, the rookie right-hander will look to continue his success at Sugar Land while positioning himself for another opportunity in Houston.
