The Houston Astros have endured a difficult season so far. They are currently 15-23 and tied for last place in the American League West standings. While the idea of the Astros trading Yordan Alvarez seems unrealistic, it has been mentioned as a possibility. However, according to Will Kunkel, Houston is not planning to trade the slugger.
“I am told Astros star Yordan Alvarez is ‘NOT ON THE MARKET,’ per a source. There have been ZERO calls of interest on Alvarez at this point,” Kunkel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The American League West is one of the worst divisions in MLB. At 19-18, the Athletics lead the way and they are the only ball club that is currently over .500 in the division. Houston is only four and a half games back of the A’s at the moment.
There is no reason to trade Alvarez this season unless Houston is planning on entering a complete rebuild. Alvarez, 28, is under contract through the 2028 campaign. There is no urgency to move on from him right now. If the Astros are unable to sign him to a contract extension, trading him next year will remain a possibility.
Alvarez is having another tremendous season despite the Astros’ underperformance. The veteran is currently hitting .319/.423/.638 across 38 games played. He has hit 12 home runs as well.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, it seems likely that Yordan Alvarez will not be traded during the 2026 MLB season.
The Astros’ next game is scheduled for Friday night against the Reds in Cincinnati at 6:10 PM EST.
