The Houston Astros got a much-needed lift Wednesday with the return of Spencer Arrighetti. The right-hander has been sidelined since April after fracturing his thumb during pregame warmups in Seattle.
Arrighetti will start Wednesday in Miami, giving Houston a fifth starter after weeks of piecing together games behind Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, Colton Gordon, and Jason Alexander.
His return comes at the right time. The Astros are looking to keep pace of the American League West lead and need all the pitching depth they can get. Even though Arrighetti is back, the Astros lost another key player.
Isaac Paredes, the Astros' All-Star third baseman, has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a significant right hamstring strain. The injury occurred on July 19 in Seattle while he was running after a long single. It was clear from the moment he went down that it was serious.

Instead of proceeding with surgery, which would have sidelined him for the remainder of the season, Paredes opted for a PRP injection along with a rehab plan. The aim is to make a comeback in September, although the timeline remains unclear. Manager Joe Espada conveyed to reporters that the injury is "pretty significant."
This situation represents a considerable setback for the Astros lineup. Paredes and Jose Altuve are tied for the team lead with 19 home runs, and Paredes has also contributed 61 runs. Furthermore, his .829 OPS places him among the top performers on the roster. He is not merely a power hitter; he also provides a consistent presence in the middle of the order.
With Carlos Correa expected to shift over to third base and recent pickup Ramón Urías filling in where needed, the Astros will try to cover the gap. But there is no one-for-one replacement for Paredes. His absence creates a hole in the lineup that's already stretched thin.
