Astros Taking Surprising Trade Deadline Stance

The Houston Astros, like many American League teams this year, find themselves at an interesting juncture.

Here on June 21st, the Astros sit fourth in their division with a 36-42 record. Yet, they find themselves just 3.0 games back of the first-place Seattle Mariners and just 2.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.

Houston has taken what looked to be a lost season early on and turned it around, holding the second-best record in the AL at 16-11 over their last 27 games. With things seemingly trending in the right direction, it looks like the front office has made their decision on how to approach the trade deadline.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday that the Astros are signaling to the rest of the league that they will be buyers, not sellers, and that despite their record they will not be listening on trade offers for shortstop Jeremy Peña and first baseman Christian Walker.

Nightengale adds that as buyers, they will be in pursuit of a left-handed hitting outfielder and bullpen help.

With plenty of time left until the August 3rd deadline, it does come as a bit of a surprise to see Houston take such a firm stance at this point. While they are starting to look like the team that many thought they could be, they have already seen one season-ending injury to shortstop Carlos Correa and could be just one more injury away from lacking the firepower needed to make a postseason push.

Peña, 28, is under team control until 2028 and could net a serious return if put up on the trade block. After an early injury, he has posted .284/.345/.452 splits and currently ranks fifth among AL shortstops in All-Star Game voting.

Walker, 35, is halfway into his three-year extension and would naturally be considered a top deadline target for the thump he can bring to a lineup. The veteran first baseman has already belted 18 homers this year.

As early underachievers, many circled the Astros as a team to call later in the season to add an impact bat. On top of Peña and Walker, infielder Isaac Parades was widely considered to be a top right-handed bat on the market, and AL MVP favorite Yordan Alvarez had been floated as a somewhat unrealistic but extremely valuable target.

While Nightengale's report does not rule out a trade of Parades, it is unlikely that Houston would move off of an everyday contributor if they are looking to buy for this season, unless they could net a left-handed bat of equal value. The club could look to revisit their rumored offseason discussions to swap Parades for Boston's Jarren Duran, though the Red Sox's struggles this year make it hard to imagine them taking on an established player in this kind of deal.

That said, Houston's reported needs do match up well with Boston, both with Duran as a left-handed hitting outfielder and with Aroldis Chapman as the best reliever expected to be made available.

Team's decisions around the trade deadline are rarely set in stone, and declarative statements like the ones reported by Nightengale could always shift and adapt to what is ultimately happening on the field. But with the Astros finding their stride, it will make for a drastically different landscape at the deadline if a team sitting on some of the most highly sought after assets decides to stand firm.
