Two American League West rivals have swung a trade with each other.
The Athletics are acquiring left-handed pitcher Jose Suarez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations.
The Mariners designated Suarez for assignment earlier in the week. The A's designated Junior Perez for assignment to make room for Suarez.
Suarez is out of minor league options, which means he will report to the A's big-league club.
The A's will be the third team that Suarez has pitched for this season. He opened the year with the Atlanta Braves, who designated him for assignment on May 1. The Mariners claimed Suarez off waivers two days later, but only gave him one appearance of two innings before ejecting him from their 40-man roster.
Overall, the 28-year-old southpaw has posted a 6.38 ERA across 18.1 innings this season. Suarez has struck out 24 batters this year, but has a 2.07 WHIP and 14 walks.
Suarez posted a 1.86 ERA in seven appearances and 19.1 innings for the Braves in a small sample size last season.
Before joining the Braves last year, Suarez spent six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels from 2019-2024. Suarez was mostly a starter with the Angels and had some solid campaigns in 2021 and 2022. However, he hasn't been the same since straining his shoulder back in 2023.
The A's are currently 1.5 games up on the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. Suarez will add to their pitching depth and provide a veteran arm in the bullpen, who can also start games as an opener.
