The Athletics officially broke ground for their new stadium in Las Vegas, which will be located at the site of the former Tropicana hotel.
A’s owner John Fisher, manager Mark Kotsay, Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred were among those in attendance for Monday’s ceremony.
The ballpark, which is expected to be open for the start of the 2028 season, has an estimated cost of $1.75 billion. It is being built on a 36-acre lot that will also house a future hotel resort and entertainment complex.
The new stadium will hold a capacity of 33,000 fans and feature the closest seats to home plate of any MLB ballpark. The building will be fully enclosed by a roof, offering views of the Las Vegas Strip through a glass window beyond the outfield.

The A’s moving to Las Vegas comes after more than two decades of failed efforts to secure a new stadium in Oakland. They officially left the city at the end of the 2024 season and now are temporarily playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento while their Las Vegas baseball stadium is being built.
While the Athletics are planning to move to Las Vegas in 2028, they have the option to remain in Sacramento for an additional year if obstacles or delays arise with the construction of their home.
During their time in Sacramento, the team is simply known as the Athletics and do not have a city attached to them. Each A’s player is wearing a patch of Sacramento’s Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other for the 2025 season.
The Athletics previously played in Philadelphia (1901-1954) and Kansas City (1955-1967) before moving to Oakland for the 1968 season. They are the first MLB team to change cities since the Montreal Expos moved to Washington D.C., in 2005 and rebranded as the Nationals.
The A’s previously announced plans to open an Experience Center at UnCommons this fall, which will provide fans an up-close look at their future ballpark.
The interactive space will showcase seating options, premium experiences and hospitality packages, giving fans an idea of what it will feel like to be part of the team’s next chapter in Southern Nevada.
