Athletics lose 6-2 to Giants after miscues at Scottsdale

The Athletics led early Monday, but a pair of defensive miscues and a steady stream of two-out hits sent them to a 6-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale Stadium.

Oakland scored first in the opening inning. Nick Kurtz walked, Austin Wynns singled and Carlos Cortes reached to load the bases. Max Muncy then grounded into a double play, but Kurtz crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead.

That advantage did not last. The Giants started chipping away in the third on Luis Arraez’s RBI single, then pulled even in the fourth on a soft infield hit by Drew Gilbert that became bigger when Muncy’s throw skipped away, allowing Jung Hoo Lee to score and Gilbert to take second.

One swing for the lead, then the Giants keep stacking

San Francisco grabbed the lead in the fifth on Arraez’s ground-rule double to right-center, scoring Nate Furman to make it 3-2. From there, the Giants kept winning the small moments, adding an RBI single from Victor Bericoto in the sixth and a two-out RBI single by Luis Matos in the seventh.

Bericoto put the finishing touch on it in the eighth, driving a leadoff homer to right-center.

The A’s had chances, piling up 10 hits and seven walks, but the big hit never came. Oakland went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base.
