Athletics pitcher Luis Severino provided an encouraging update after leaving Friday night's game against the New York Yankees with right arm soreness, saying his biggest concern is avoiding a long-term injury. Severino exited during the early stages of Oakland's 8-2 loss to the Yankees at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.

The veteran right-hander left the game while warming up for the second inning after experiencing increasing discomfort in his throwing arm. Left-hander José Suárez entered in relief.

The issue developed as Severino prepared for the start of the second inning. He walked behind the mound and looked toward the dugout. Catcher Shea Langeliers immediately signaled for assistance, and manager Mark Kotsay and a trainer came to the mound, before Severino headed to the clubhouse after a brief conversation.

Following the game, the Athletics announced that Severino would undergo further testing on Saturday to determine the severity of the injury. According to Martín Gallegos on X, Severino said he hopes the tests reveal nothing serious. The 32-year-old explained that while missing a start or two would be manageable, he wants to avoid a diagnosis that could keep him out for an extended period.

He also revealed that he first noticed discomfort during his May 21 start against the Los Angeles Angels. In that outing, he struck out a season-high 10 batters without issuing a walk across seven innings.

Despite the discomfort, he completed the start and later got through a bullpen session earlier this week without any issues. But the Dominican Republic native said the tightness returned around his right triceps and shoulder area, and the discomfort increased with every pitch he threw.

He ultimately decided to stop because he feared continuing could lead to a more serious injury. Before exiting, Severino struggled through a difficult first inning against his former team. A mistake by first baseman Nick Kurtz extended the inning and opened the door for New York's offense.

Aaron Judge followed with an RBI single before Paul Goldschmidt launched a three-run home run. All four runs scored against Severino were unearned. He carried a 4.41 ERA with 58 strikeouts across 67.1 innings this season entering Friday’s start.

The loss continued a difficult trend for Severino against the Yankees. Through four career starts against his former club, he owns an 0-2 record and has allowed 19 runs, including 15 earned runs, across 13.2 innings. Severino spent nine seasons with the Yankees from 2015 through 2023. During that stretch, he posted a 54-37 record with a 3.79 ERA and earned two All-Star selections. He joined the New York Mets in 2024 before signing with the Athletics.
