The Athletics received unfortunate news Friday after infielder Zack Gelof was placed on the 10-day injured list with a deep right knee laceration. Gelof sustained the injury Thursday night when he crashed into the outfield fence while making a sliding catch in foul territory against the Detroit Tigers, prompting the club to make an immediate roster move.
The 26-year-old has been one of the Athletics' top offensive contributors this season, appearing in 67 games while batting .283 with 11 home runs, 29 RBIs, eight stolen bases and an .803 OPS. Manager Mark Kotsay said Gelof underwent an MRI after receiving treatment, though the club has not announced a timetable for his return.
To replace Gelof on the active roster, the Athletics recalled veteran infielder Joey Meneses from Triple-A Las Vegas. The move gives the Athletics another experienced right-handed bat while maintaining infield depth entering the final games before the All-Star break.

Meneses, 34, has appeared in seven major league games with the Athletics this season, batting .143 with two RBIs. He earned another opportunity after enjoying a productive season with the Las Vegas Aviators, where he is hitting .347 with 12 home runs and 80 RBIs.
Gelof's absence leaves the Athletics without one of its regular infielders and a consistent source of offense. His combination of power and speed has made him an important part of the lineup throughout the first half.
The Athletics entered Friday with a 41-52 record as they continued navigating the second half of the American League West standings. Recalling Meneses provides roster flexibility while the club evaluates its infield options during Gelof's absence.
The Athletics have not provided a recovery timeline beyond Gelof's placement on the 10-day injured list. Additional updates are expected once his knee responds to treatment and further evaluation.
For now, Meneses will have an opportunity to contribute at the major league level as the Athletics look to finish the first half on a positive note while awaiting Gelof's return.
