Athletics left fielder Tyler Soderstrom exited Saturday’s game versus the Los Angeles Angels in the bottom of the third inning. Lawrence Butler took his spot for the rest of the game as the A’s fell 5-2.
With the loss, the team dropped to 40-43 on the season. They are in fourth place in a weak American League West, two games behind the first-place Texas Rangers.
Soderstrom has been an important cog in an A’s lineup that has been very good. It ranks seventh in MLB with a .740 OPS and seventh in home runs with 107.
The 24-year-old Soderstrom has appeared in 80 games, slashing .242/.343/.460 (.803 OPS) with 13 home runs and 41 RBIs.
During the month of June, Soderstrom has been especially hot. In 98 plate appearances, the outfielder has nine extra-base hits with a .951 OPS.
Now approaching the end of the month, the A’s have not had Soderstrom in the lineup for most of the weekend. This comes as a result of hip tightness.
Michael Huntley of Sporting Tribune reported ahead of Sunday’s game against Los Angeles that Soderstrom “feels much better this morning than he did last night.”

Huntley added in the replies section of the post that he doubted Soderstrom will be put on the injured list, and that more will be known after Sunday’s game.
The A’s will head back north after Sunday’s game in southern California to host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first of a three game series. Soderstrom could potentially return sometime during that set.
For Sunday’s lineup, second-year player Colby Thomas took his spot in left field while Butler moved to right field. Thomas does not have much MLB experience in left field, as he is usually in right.
The 25-year-old has produced only a .203 batting average and .555 OPS in a minimal sample of 79 plate appearances this season. If Soderstrom is to miss time, Thomas should get some more run in left field.
