Athletics To Select Jonathan Ornelas

The Athletics are calling up infielder Jonathan Ornelas, reports Francys Romero of BeisbolFR. The A’s will need to make a move, or moves, to make room for him on both the active and 40-man rosters.

Ornelas, 26, just signed a minor league deal with the A’s last week. He spent most of this year with the Yankees on a minor league deal but opted out of that pact earlier this month, which allowed the A’s to scoop him up. Between the two clubs, he has a .310/.378/.505 line in 308 Triple-A plate appearances this year. That leads to a strong 128 wRC+ but is propped up by an unsustainable .388 balls in play.

In his big league career, with consists of just 32 games, Ornelas has been a light-hitting infielder. He has a .208/.263/.245 line in 58 plate appearances. He has lots of professional experience at the three infield positions to the left of first base, in addition to more limited stints in all three outfield slots. Since his offensive numbers are a bit more encouraging this year, the A’s will see if he can carry that over to the big leagues while giving them cover at multiple positions on the diamond.
