Austin Riley Reacts to Special Moment in Braves Win

Austin Riley has experienced plenty of memorable moments throughout his career with the Atlanta Braves, but Thursday’s postseason win over the Philadelphia Phillies gave him another one to remember.

The Braves defeated the Phillies 6-2 in a decisive Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series at Truist Park. While Atlanta’s offense provided an early cushion, the moment that stood out to Riley came when Chris Sale emerged from the bullpen to help finish the game.

Riley described the scene as one of the coolest moments he had experienced in baseball, particularly because of the crowd’s reaction as Sale took the mound.

“I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff in my baseball career, but when Chris Sale ran out of the bullpen, that’s one of the cooler moments I’ve been a part of,” Riley said. “To hear the crowd, be in that moment, that was special.”

Sale’s appearance was unusual for a pitcher who had been one of Atlanta’s most important starters. The left-hander entered in relief and helped protect the Braves’ lead, striking out three batters as Atlanta closed out the elimination game.

The Braves had already built momentum early. Michael Harris II launched a three-run homer in the first inning, while Ozzie Albies added a two-run shot in the fourth. Matt Olson later contributed a solo home run as Atlanta pulled away.

The win also offered another important postseason moment for Riley. After struggling through the regular season, he delivered a decisive three-run homer in Game 1 against Philadelphia, helping Atlanta take the opening game of the series. He then reached base twice with walks in Thursday’s clincher.

Atlanta’s victory sends the Braves to the NL Division Series, where they are scheduled to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. After surviving a winner-take-all matchup against a division rival, the Braves will now turn their attention to another demanding postseason series.

For Riley, though, the image of Sale charging out of the bullpen and the roar that followed will remain one of the night’s defining memories.
