The Toronto Blue Jays (38-39) appeared to be on the cusp of a full-blown explosion multiple times this year, and as they approach .500 yet again, the organization is deciding to make a seemingly minor yet potentially intriguing midseason acquisition. The 2025 American League champions are sending cash to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for veteran infielder Luis Urias, per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

The 29-year-old Mexican signed a minor league contract with the Snakes in March and will therefore report to Triple-A Buffalo for the time being. Urias has spent time at second, third and shortstop, so there is a chance he finds his way to Toronto at some point this season. He posted a .230 batting average and .653 OPS in 96 games for the Athletics in 2025.

This move is admittedly not an impactful one on the surface, but the right-handed hitter boasts a respectable 10.2 percent walk rate for his career. He is also producing in the minors, slashing .361/.393/.546/.939 in 27 games for the Triple-A Reno Aces. Since Toronto still has several players working their way back from injuries, an additional ballplayer who carries plenty of experience could come in handy.

Unlikely contributors emerged for the Blue Jays during their momentous 2025 run, so perhaps Luis Urias can be the latest to occupy that role in The 6.

Following a thrilling 8-6 comeback win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, Toronto is just a half-game behind the A’s for the final AL Wild Card position. Urias will continue to strive towards an MLB return, as he gets accustomed to his eighth different organization.
