The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels agreed to a trade on Wednesday, the Blue Jays announced. The Angels acquired catcher Tyler Heineman for cash considerations. Toronto has endured ups and downs this season, but Heineman will be missed.
Heineman, 34, joined the Blue Jays during the 2024 campaign. He also spent parts of seasons with the Blue Jays in other seasons. So far in 2026, Heineman hit .154/.205/.205 across 31 games played. While his numbers do not jump off the page, Heineman is a veteran catcher who understands what it requires to manage a pitching staff.
Heineman should be able to help an Angels team that has struggled throughout the season. Los Angeles needs all of the help it can get. Perhaps Heineman will receive a big league opportunity with the Halos. He could help the pitching staff take a step forward. A catcher’s impact on a pitching rotation should not be overlooked.
The Blue Jays are 35-38 and in third place in the American League East standings. Meanwhile, the Angels are 30-45 overall and in last place in the American League West standings.
Toronto reached the World Series last year, but the ball club has not performed up to expectations this season. The Blue Jays are still in contention for an American League Wild Card position.
The Angels, however, clearly need to rebuild. They have been hesitant to completely enter a rebuild, though.
It will be interesting to see how the Blue Jays and Angels approach their strategies for the upcoming MLB trade deadline.
