The Toronto Blue Jays enter Sunday’s series finale against the Texas Rangers looking to stop a five-game losing streak that has dropped them to 39-44 on the season. Entering the year with heightened expectations and one of MLB’s most expensive rosters, Toronto is struggling this season, with several key hitters enduring disappointing campaigns.
One player who is particularly not playing at his best is George Springer. The four-time All-Star is batting .216 with eight home runs, 21 RBIs, six stolen bases and a .673 OPS on the season. It’s a sharp decline from his stellar 2025 campaign, where he averaged a career high .309 with 154 hits, 32 homers, 84 RBIs and 106 runs scored in 140 games.
Springer missed Saturday’s 7-4 loss to the Rangers, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. filling in for him at designated hitter. The club did not provide a reason for Springer’s absence, leading to questions about why he was left out of the lineup.
However, hours before Sunday’s matchup, the Blue Jays announced that Springer will return to the starting lineup at DH. Guerrero went 0-for-5 in his absence, and Toronto will hope it can get the best out of Springer as it aims to avoid slipping further down the American League standings.

The Blue Jays are 9.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays and risk slipping to fourth in the AL East, with the Baltimore Orioles (39-44) creeping right behind. Shane Bieber (0-0, 9.82 ERA) takes the mound on Sunday, marking his second start this season.
