The Toronto Blue Jays won two straight AL Championship Series road games against the Seattle Mariners after losing the first two at home, and outfielder/designated hitter George Springer was a key reason why.

The former Houston Astro went 3-for-6 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Toronto's 13-4 win on Wednesday and 1-for-5 with a double and a run in Thursday's 8-2 victory. He continued his momentum in Friday's Game 5 with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score 1-1.

However, Springer left the contest after getting hit in the knee by a pitch in the seventh. Toronto manager John Schneider revealed an update postgame via The Athletic's Mitch Bannon.

The X-rays of Springer's knee were negative.

Backup outfielder Joey Loperfido pinch ran for Springer and advanced to second on a groundout by outfielder Nathan Lukes, but was then stranded there after catcher Alejandro Kirk grounded out to end the inning. The Blue Jays were up 2-1 at the time thanks to an RBI single by third baseman Ernie Clement in the sixth, but they lost 6-2 after an eighth-inning grand slam by Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez. They're now down 3-2 in the series and are facing elimination.

Losing Springer would be devastating for Toronto, as he's a key pillar of the offense. The 36-year-old finished fourth in baseball with a .309 batting average and .959 OPS in the regular season and entered Friday with a .911 postseason OPS this year. The latter stat ranked fourth on the squad behind superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1.470), Clement (1.067), and outfielder Daulton Varsho (.917).

George Springer Bounced Back After Down Season

Springer experienced the highs and lows of baseball over the last two years. After slashing a career-low .220/.303/.371 with 19 homers and 54 RBIs last season, he slashed a career-high .309/.399/.560 with 32 homers and 84 RBIs in 2025.

Springer signed a six-year, $150 million contract with Toronto in January 2021 after spending his first seven seasons with the Astros, per Spotrac. The University of Connecticut product added championship experience to the club, as he won the 2017 World Series with Houston. He also earned World Series MVP honors and slashed .292/.386/.611 with six homers and nine RBIs over 18 games that postseason.

Springer has yet to return to the World Series since going to the Blue Jays, as they missed the playoffs in his first season before losing the AL Wild Card Series the next two years. They then missed the postseason again in 2024.

Game 6 of the AL Championship Series will be on Sunday in Toronto. The contest will start at 8:03 p.m. ET on FS1.
