The Toronto Blue Jays are fighting to make their way back to the postseason after missing out in 2024, and the lineup must stay healthy in order to do so. At 78–58, the Blue Jays are in sole possession of first place in the AL East, but the New York Yankees have been surging and now enter Sunday just two games behind.
This past week, Toronto has been playing shorthanded, with Daulton Varsho and Ernie Clement both missing games.
Varsho exited early against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday after being struck by a fastball in the right hand—a disappointing development considering his strong August, where he posted a .250 batting average, .329 on-base percentage, .926 OPS, seven home runs, and 22 RBIs in just 20 starts.
Clement, on the other hand, sustained a hairline fracture in his left middle finger and required 10 stitches in his left shin following a collision at third base on Tuesday.
During Sunday’s game against the Brewers, Toronto announced a move, adding a familiar face to the active roster.
The team wrote, “INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa has been claimed off waivers from the Pirates. Welcome Back, IKF!”
Kiner-Falefa was placed on outright waivers Friday, and his positional versatility has earned him another opportunity with Toronto after being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

This move comes on the heels of the latest Varsho and Clement updates. As for Varsho, Sunday marked his second straight missed game, but his return appears imminent—it’s now a matter of managing pain and swelling.
“Daulton Varsho’s doing well, John Schneider says. The X-rays were negative, just some pain and swelling. He’s out of the lineup today, but they’ll test him out to see if he could be a defensive replacement or pinch-hit,” wrote MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.
Clement returned to the lineup Sunday and will play through the fracture for the remainder of the season.
Although Kiner-Falefa hasn’t produced much offensively, his ability to plug in at third base for Clement if his fracture causes any issues or cover the outfield while Varsho recovers will be beneficial as Toronto pushes toward October.
