Following their weekend series versus the St. Louis Cardinals, the Toronto Blue Jays sit at 52-60. They are last place in the American League East and 13 ½ games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.

The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in offloading two players on expiring contracts: outfielder George Springer and right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman. They have been with Toronto since 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Gausman’s tenure with the club has been everything you would expect from a five-year, $110 million contract. He has made 31 or more starts in every full season, and has not missed one yet in 2026.

Gausman has 23 starts this year, pitching 127 ⅓ innings. He is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA, having struck out 127 and walked 36. He is striking out more batters per nine innings this season than in 2024 and 2025.

It is apparent that the 35-year-old Gausman still has something in the tank. That is why he has generated a lot of trade interest from certain teams and would fetch a decent return.

While those trade rumors are happening, the Blue Jays made a different move. They announced on Sunday that they have officially acquired right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs actually designated Taillon for assignment earlier this week, but they have managed to get something for him after all. The Blue Jays will be giving them cash considerations and a prospect to be named later.

The Canadian righty is in the final year of a four-year, $68 million deal that he originally signed with Chicago in 2022. This season, he has made 15 starts, throwing 76 innings. He is 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA, striking out 68 and walking 27.

Taillon’s DFA is no mistake, as he is now 34 years old and has surrendered 25 home runs this season for a mammoth 2.96 home runs per nine innings rate. He is being brought in by the Blue Jays to eat innings.

What this means for Gausman is currently unclear. This does not necessarily indicate that he will be traded, as there is space in the club’s starting rotation and bullpen regardless. The trade deadline is Monday at 6 p.m. ET.
