The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers delivered one of the most memorable World Series matchups in MLB history last fall. Unfortunately for Toronto, the Dodgers emerged victorious, extending the Blue Jays championship drought to 33 years.
With both clubs built around elite cores, a long-term rivalry has begun to take shape, but their 2026 seasons have opened very differently.
Los Angeles continues to dominate the National League West, while Toronto has battled injuries and entered Tuesday sitting fourth in the AL Central. Still, there is plenty of time for the Blue Jays to climb back into postseason contention.
Toronto is also finally getting healthier. Designated hitter George Springer is expected to return from the 10-day injured list this week. But with the 40-man roster full, a corresponding move was required, and it came Tuesday in the form of a trade with the Dodgers.
The Blue Jays announced they have dealt infielder Tyler Fitzgerald to Los Angeles in exchange for cash considerations.
Fitzgerald had been designated for assignment last week, and the Dodgers moved quickly to acquire him before he reached waivers. He never appeared in a game for Toronto and had only been with the organization since early April, when the Blue Jays traded for him after he was DFA’d by the San Francisco Giants.
Los Angeles has the ability to option Fitzgerald to the minor leagues, which is the likely outcome.

The 28-year-old is just two seasons removed from a strong 2024 campaign in which he posted a .280/.334/.831 slash line over 96 games, but he has not hit at that level since.
Still, his defensive versatility, with experience across the infield and outfield, made him appealing to the Dodgers. Fitzgerald struggled at Triple-A Buffalo, which ultimately led to Toronto designating him for assignment.
For the Blue Jays, the move clears the necessary roster space as they prepare to activate Springer, a big step for a team trying to regain its footing after an inconsistent start.
