The Toronto Blue Jays have one of the deepest rotations in the league as Opening Day approaches. While the addition of right‑hander Dylan Cease in free agency gives the staff a proven ace, Trey Yesavage may ultimately become the organization’s most valuable arm.
Yesavage still holds rookie eligibility for the 2026 season after making just three regular‑season starts, yet his biggest impact came in October. He posted a 3‑1 record with a 3.58 ERA and 39 strikeouts across 27 2/3 innings during the postseason.
His best outing came in Game 5 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he became the first rookie ever to record 12 strikeouts in a World Series game. Expectations are high entering 2026, with many projecting him to win American League Rookie of the Year and take another leap forward.
Yesavage carried a heavy workload during Toronto’s postseason run, and the Blue Jays are taking a cautious approach this spring. The 22‑year‑old right‑hander has yet to appear in a Grapefruit League game, and when he does, he is expected to be limited to 3-4 innings, potentially even through Opening Day. Toronto is taking no risks with one of its most important young pitchers.
As spring training continues, the annual Spring Breakout, a four‑day, 16‑game exhibition event featuring top minor‑league prospects from all 30 teams, approaches in mid‑March.
On Thursday, the Blue Jays announced their roster for the event, a group built around the organization’s top 30 prospects and rising young talent. Listed among the pitchers was Yesavage, who despite pitching in the MLB playoffs is still considered a prospect. He ranks No. 12 in MLB and remains Toronto’s top prospect.

His prospect status exists because Yesavage is still a rookie, even if it feels unusual given how quickly he reached the majors. He skyrocketed through the minor‑league system last year, beginning the season in High‑A before earning a spot on the 40‑man roster in September. Yesavage has been with the organization since being selected in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Toronto views him as a foundational piece for the next decade, and his continued development this spring will be one of the most important storylines as the Blue Jays prepare for another deep postseason push.
