Blue Jays Announce Andres Gimenez News After 2 Straight Losses

The Toronto Blue Jays were embarrassed at home on Tuesday, dropping a second straight game to the Detroit Tigers by a final score of 10-1. Given the Cleveland Guardians also won, the deficit for the final American League wild card spot has jumped to two games with just 10 games remaining. The margin for error is now completely gone.

After the game, manager John Schneider revealed that one of the team’s most important defensive players is dealing with an injury. Shortstop Andres Gimenez was unable to finish Tuesday’s matchup at Rogers Centre.

The 28-year-old struck out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and when Toronto took the field in the top of the eighth he was out of the game with Davis Schneider entering in his place. After the game, Schneider revealed the removal was injury-related rather than a result of the lopsided score.

While Gimenez has not provided much with the bat this year, hitting .243 with a .647 OPS across 141 games, he provides enormous value with his glove. He grades out as one of the best defenders in MLB at both shortstop and second base. With him sidelined, Ernie Clement will likely continue to play shortstop in his absence.

Given he is day-to-day, Gimenez could theoretically return as soon as Wednesday for the series finale against Detroit, though that seems unlikely.

If the Blue Jays give him the day off, he will effectively get two full days to recover with Thursday being an off day, potentially having him ready for Friday’s important three-game road series against the Texas Rangers.
