The revolving door of depth arms continues to spin.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Thursday that they’ve claimed right-handed pitcher Emmanuel Ramírez off of waivers from the Miami Marlins and that José Cuas has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Ramírez signed with the San Diego Padres in 2012 and spent seven seasons with the organization before being granted free agency following the shortened 2020 season. The right-hander bounced around the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees organizations in 2021 and 2022 before spending the 2023 season pitching in Mexico.

The Marlins signed Ramírez in January and he’s spent the 2024 season pitching between Miami and their Triple-A affiliate in Jacksonville. Ramírez owns a 3.76 ERA over 25 appearances for the Jumbo Shrimp and he’s posted a 6.97 ERA over his first 15 appearances at the Major League level.

The Blue Jays claimed José Cuas off of waivers from the Chicago Cubs back in May after designating veteran left-hander Tim Mayza for assignment. He pitched three innings over four appearances with Toronto and allowed three earned runs while striking out three batters and walking four. He also has a 6.89 ERA over 16 appearances with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

After featuring one of the deepest bullpens in baseball last season, the Blue Jays have struggled through injuries and poor performance when it comes to their relievers. Jordan Romano has spent much of the season on the Injured List, Erik Swanson was demoted to Buffalo for a period of time, and Mayza was released from the organization, while the likes of Ryan Burr and Brendon Little have taken on more high-leverage innings than ever expected.
