Blue Jays' Deadline Acquisition Set for Rehab Start

Arrighetti has not appeared in an MLB game since July 24 against the Chicago White Sox. He exited that start in the second inning after suffering the injury, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while also hitting two batters during a difficult first inning.

That outing was another rough performance in what has been a challenging stretch since June.

Through May, Arrighetti owned a 7-1 record with a 1.34 ERA across eight starts. He was especially dominant in May, going 4-1 with a stellar 0.93 ERA over 29 innings. He allowed just three earned runs during the month and did not give up more than one in any start. Arrighetti’s outstanding performance earned him American League Pitcher of the Month honors.

Since then, however, the results have gone in the opposite direction.

Over his last nine starts, Arrighetti is 0-4 with an 8.34 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Command has been a glaring issue, as he has allowed 24 walks during that span. Notably, Arrighetti recorded more walks (13) than strikeouts (12) across four July starts.

The long ball has also become a problem. After surrendering just two home runs through May, Arrighetti has allowed 10 since the calendar flipped to June.

Those struggles have raised his 2026 ERA to 4.60 across 88 innings.

Despite the inconsistency, Arrighetti has flashed upside at the major league level. He also remains under team control through the end of the 2029 season, making him an appealing long-term addition. Toronto's decision to acquire both Arrighetti and José Soriano suggests the Blue Jays were not fully selling at the deadline but instead retooling with controllable starting pitching.

If Arrighetti's rehab outing goes well on Thursday, he could join Toronto's pitching staff shortly afterward and become part of the Blue Jays' new-look rotation. Following the trade of Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, Toronto's rotation currently features Dylan Cease , Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer , and newcomers Soriano and Jameson Taillon.

With Trey Yesavage landing on the 15-day injured list Wednesday because of left knee inflammation, Arrighetti could take his spot in the rotation.

Although they have had a disappointing 2026 campaign, the Blue Jays (54-61) sit just three games behind the final American League wild-card spot.
