The Toronto Blue Jays made a handful of transactions before their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels.
On Sunday morning, the Jays announced that they’ve reinstated Ryan Burr from the 60-day Injured List, designating Will Robertson for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Additionally, Lázaro Estrada was optioned and Andrés Giménez was placed on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to Saturday. To replace Giménez on the 26-man roster, the Jays recalled Joey Loperfido.

Let’s start with Robertson. The 27-year-old will almost certainly be picked up on waivers, as he’s slashing .292/.403/.578 with 14 home runs in 233 plate appearances with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. The 14 home runs are the most in the Blue Jays organization, and his 157 wRC+ is the best for any qualified minor league player in the Blue Jays system.
Assuming he’s picked up on waivers, Robertson will get an opportunity with a different team that’s not in a pennant race. Hopefully, he does well with it.
Loperfido hasn’t been bad in Triple-A by any means, as he’s slashing .278/.354/.422 with six home runs in 315 plate appearances for a 111 wRC+. Since April 22, the outfielder is slashing .298/.368/.453 with five home runs in 254 plate appearances for a 122 wRC+ in that stretch. Loperfido was acquired in the Yusei Kikuchi trade at the last trade deadline and struggled with the Blue Jays in 2024.
It’s nice to have Burr back in the bullpen, as he doesn’t just give them a fresh arm, but the 31-year-old was one of their better relievers last season. In 32.2 innings pitched, the righty had a 4.13 ERA and a 3.07 FIP, with a 33.6 K% and an 8.6 BB%. His K% led the team’s relievers after Yimi García was traded.
Like García, Giménez was placed on the Injured List, retroactive to Saturday. Since it’s retroactive, it’ll likely be a shorter stint on the IL, which is still unfortunate given how the second baseman has performed well since returning from the IL. Since June 3, Giménez has slashed .253/.340/.349 with two home runs in 95 plate appearances, and since June 25, Giménez has a 174 wRC+.
Estrada made his big league debut on Saturday, going four innings with one earned run allowed and four strikeouts. It’s a good debut, but Estrada threw 47 pitches and won’t be available for the next few days, hence being optioned.
