Blue Jays faithful buzzing during intrasquad games at the Rogers Centre: ‘We’re going all the way'

It’s 4 p.m. on a Thursday. While most people were wrapping up their workday, more than 8,000 Toronto Blue Jays fans filed into the Rogers Centre to watch what was, on paper, the most meaningless game of the year.

The lineups, positions, even the rules themselves didn’t seem to matter much in the Jays’ second intrasquad game. But the fans who showed up couldn’t have cared less. The vibe among the Blue Jays faithful was electric.

Die-hard fan Meesh summed it up perfectly by saying, “We are going all the way… all my friends had to eat a little crow this week, ‘cause we made it to the postseason. We are going all the way.”

That confidence was a common theme among the Jays’ faithful. Another long-time fan followed suit, saying, “I don’t know about you guys, but I am really, really feeling World Series vibes. The energy hasn’t felt like this since 2015–2016, and I’d say this team is a lot deeper than those.”

On the subject of depth, the Blue Jays fan has a great point. The Jays wrapped up the regular season with the best batting average in baseball (.265) and the highest on-base percentage (.333). A huge part of that success came from Toronto’s 7-through-9 hitters. They collectively hit better than any other bottom third in the league, meaning opposing pitchers rarely get a breather, and also meaning the Jays might have the deepest lineup in baseball. Maybe that’s why fans seem to have so much faith in this team.

Santos, the host of a local Jays-focused podcast, believes that faith is the key to success.“Just trust one another. I think that’s the main key to actually winning a game.”

Meesh echoed that sentiment. “Trust. Trust is the X-factor. Trust in themselves, trust in their teammates, just trust in the process.”

And it’s hard to argue with the process. It carried the Jays to the best record in the American League this season. That’s exactly why super-fan Chester believes the team shouldn’t overthink anything heading into October: “Just keep doing what you’re doing.”

The biggest takeaway from Thursday afternoon wasn’t the final score — it was the overwhelming sense of hope that filled the stadium. If that hope eventually culminates in a World Series title, it’s also clear that Jays fans are ready to celebrate in style.

When asked how he’d mark a potential championship, one fan referenced George Springer’s wish to ride a horse shirtless through downtown Toronto and added, “I’d go tarps-off, grab a zebra, and ride right behind him.”

With that kind of energy in the stands, the ALDS and the New York Yankees can’t come soon enough. This weekend is going to be an exciting time for the Jays faithful, who will hopefully see their hometown club win their first October baseball game since 2016.
