The Toronto Blue Jays were forced to rely heavily on their bullpen to get through the 2026 season.
With a starting rotation that felt like it was dealing with a different injury each week, the Blue Jays were forced to shuffle arms through their pitching staff to get through the course of the 162-game season.
While the bullpen held up well for much of the campaign, the opportunity to add another high-leverage arm to the group through free agency could be hard to pass up.
Once a winner is crowned between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series, Adrian Morejon will become a free agent for the first time since he was signed by the San Diego Padres to a minor-league deal on July 7, 2016, as an international free agent.
Morejon has spent all eight of his seasons in Major League Baseball with the Padres, and after becoming a mainstay in their bullpen during the 2024 campaign, he has turned himself into one of the game’s best left-handed relievers.
Across 60 games in 2024, Morejon produced a 2.83 ERA before he upped that in the 2025 season by appearing in 75 games, and posted a 13-6 record with a 2.08 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP.
In 2026, Morejon pitched in a career-high 76 games and went 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. The 27-year-old struck out 107 batters – the third-most of any reliever, trailing only Mason Miller and Aaron Ashby – across 86 innings and limited opponents to a .205 average.
Morejon appeared in two games this postseason, first during the National League Wild Card Series against in Game 2’s 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs, then again in Game 1 of the NL Division series against the Brewers. Morejon threw two innings in each of his outings and allowed one run on four hits, while striking out two.
Speaking to the media after being eliminated from the playoffs, Morejon stated he wants to stay in San Diego, but knows that the free agency process can be unpredictable, especially for a top-of-the-market reliever who should draw interest from many teams across the league.
“I feel sad because I don’t want to say goodbye,” Morejon said. “But it’s business, and let’s see what happens during the offseason.”
After the Blue Jays were forced to use Mason Fluharty in 83 games – the most in MLB – so adding another left-hander to the back end of the bullpen could go a long way in further strengthening Toronto’s bullpen. The only other left-handed options currently on the 40-man roster are Brendan Cellucci, Brendon Little, and Ricky Tiedemann, so this is an area that could be in need of an upgrade.
If the Blue Jays want Morejon, they are likely going to have to break the bank for the young lefty. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter projects Morejon to receive a five-year, $90-million deal, and while it’s a steep price to pay, the thought of Louis Varland, Tyler Rogers, and Morejon working as a three-headed monster has to spark some interest for the Blue Jays management group.
