The Toronto Blue Jays have announced a roster move before today’s afternoon contest against the Texas Rangers.

Outfielder George Springer, who landed on the 7-day concussion IL on August 1st (retro to July 29th), is returning to the roster, while outfielder Joey Loperfido will be the corresponding move back to the minor leagues.

Springer left the July 28th game against the Orioles after taking a Kade Strowd fastball to the head in the top of the ninth inning. It was a scary moment, and after lying on the field and being attended to by the training staff, Springer left the game under his own power.

The Jays outfielder had some good days and bad days during his recovery and passed MLB protocols earlier this week to get back into game action with the Buffalo Bisons. He appeared in two games and through five at-bats, he collected two hits, a double and a solo home run against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

For the 2025 season, Springer owns a .291/.383/.506 slash line while suiting up in 101 games, splitting time in the outfield and as the club’s go-to DH option with Anthony Santander also on the IL. The veteran owns a .889 OPS and a 2.3 bWAR at this point in the season and has amassed 18 doubles, 18 home runs, and 57 RBIs.

Heading to Buffalo with Springer’s return is Joey Loperfido.

While Loperfido hasn’t had the strongest last few games (two hits through his last 11 at-bats), the Pennsylvania product is heading to Buffalo more so because of the business side of the game, rather than his performance on the field. He owns an excellent .358/.409/.506 slash line through 30 games and 81 at-bats, collecting three doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBIs to go along with a .915 OPS through the short sample size. Loperfido has also handled himself well in the corner outfield spots, especially in left field, where he put together a +1 DRS with an outfield assist.

He, Addison Barger, Nathan Lukes, and Davis Schneider were the lone players on the active roster with options at their disposal, and Schneider’s ability to play second base when needed likely contributed to the roster move, while Lukes and Myles Straw can work more off the bench given their respective roles on the team. Loperfido will continue to get regular reps down in Buffalo, and when rosters expand in September, he will likely be back in Toronto.
