The last thing the Toronto Blue Jays needed Tuesday night was another health scare and for a brief, stomach-dropping moment in extras, that appeared to be exactly what they were facing. The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Blue Jays 6-5 in 10 innings at Rogers Centre, The Rays are now 5-0 against Toronto this season, and the Blue Jays have dropped to 18-24, fourth in the American League East and 10.5 games behind the division leaders.
The game’s most alarming moment came in the 10th inning. With the Rays threatening, Varsho sprinted toward the center field wall and crashed hard into the padding to haul in what would have been an extra-base hit. The play drew an immediate gasp from Rogers Centre and sent trainers moving toward the warning track.
John Schneider addressed the play after the game, offering relief to a fanbase that has grown all too accustomed to bad news this season. Per SportsNet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Schneider said Varsho is “good” following the collision. The Blue Jays manager also offered praise to the outfielder:
“I love the way he went about that,” Schneider said.

Varsho has already dealt with a left knee injury earlier this season that forced him out of a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Currently hitting .250 with a .704 OPS, four home runs and nine RBI, Varsho has been one of the few reliable offensive presences in a lineup that has been operating shorthanded for most of the season.
Aside from Varsho’s contributions on offense, he is a former Gold Glove winner and one of the best defensive outfielders in the game. Losing him for any stretch of time would compound an already difficult situation for a Toronto team still waiting on Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger to return from their respective injuries.
Dylan Cease takes the mound Wednesday for Toronto as the Blue Jays look to avoid a sweep, with first pitch set for 7:07 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre. The Rays counter with Griffin Jax.
