The Toronto Blue Jays’ season has been marked by injuries, and Daulton Varsho’s story has been no exception. The outfielder missed 52 games earlier this year with a hamstring injury before returning to the lineup in late July. Since his return, he has provided a significant spark for Toronto, hitting .257 with 18 hits, seven home runs, 22 RBIs, and 12 runs scored in 22 games.
His power surge helped stabilize the middle of the Blue Jays’ order and gave them much-needed depth during their postseason chase. But Friday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers brought another setback that has Toronto fans holding their breath.
In the seventh inning and with the Blue Jays down 7-0 at Rogers Centre, Varsho was struck on the hand by a 97 mph fastball during a check swing. The outfielder went down in obvious pain and was quickly attended to by Blue Jays manager John Schneider and the team’s trainer. He left the game immediately, with early indications suggesting a possible injury.
While the play initially looked serious, sparking speculation of bad news on the horizon, there was some relief afterward. MLB.com’s Keegan Matheeson reported that X-rays came back negative, though Varsho is still expected to deal with soreness and swelling that could sideline him for a few games.

Good news for the #BlueJays:

Varsho’s X-rays came back negative. I’d expect he’s still swollen, sore and will miss a few games, but initial tests are good.
The news sparked some excitement from Blue Jays fans who initially feared the team may have lost one of its hottest hitters at a critical point in the season. For now, it seems crisis has been avoided
While the latest development is encouraging, it's unclear how soon Varsho would return. A prolonged absence would represent a serious blow and weaken both Toronto’s outfield defense and offensive production at a crucial stretch in the season. Varsho ranks among the team’s most potent bats this season, with an OPS of .847 to go along with 15 home runs, 42 RBIs and 26 runs scored in 47 appearances this season.
Toronto will look to regroup quickly when the series against the Brewers continues on Saturday. With or without Varsho in the lineup, the Blue Jays (78-57) will hope they can maintain their lead in the American League and fend off a surging Boston Red Sox (75-60) in the division.
