The Blue Jays entered the weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies carrying momentum from several recent run-scoring wins. However, they suffered an 8-0 loss on the road against the Phillies, putting an end to their three-game win streak.
Toronto has remained without veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer, who has been working his way back from a thumb injury. Scherzer, an eight-time All-Star, joined the Blue Jays on a one-year, $15.5 million contract but has been experiencing a tough start to life after exiting his debut game on March 29 due to a right thumb inflammation.
Ahead of Saturday’s return game, manager John Schneider offered an update on Scherzer.
Following his first rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo, Scherzer's status was a major topic in Toronto. On the rehab front, the Blue Jays received good news.
Schneider said Scherzer “came out of it feeling how he expected to,” attributing any discomfort to "a little bit of normal fatigue with the most pitches he's thrown in a game since Spring Training."
The plan is for one more Triple-A rehab appearance, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, before determining a possible return to the MLB rotation.
Max Scherzer update from John Schneider:

“He came out of it feeling how he expected to. A little bit of normal [general] fatigue with the most pitches he’s thrown in a game since Spring Training.”
All good news, he says. Next AAA rehab outing scheduled for Wednesday. #BlueJays
Scherzer’s rehab start took place with the Buffalo Bisons on Friday, where he delivered 56 pitches across 4.1 innings against the Columbus Clippers, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and issuing no walks.
With Scherzer on a cautious path forward, Toronto’s rotation remains the focal point for their series against Philadelphia. A return from the Cy Young veteran would fortify their starting staff and provide much-needed depth.
