The Toronto Blue Jays are entering the offseason after falling just one win short of capturing the World Series title. Despite the loss, their miraculous run to an AL East division crown and American League pennant has motivated the front office to invest heavily in the roster for 2026.
While the Blue Jays remain focused on re-signing free agent and homegrown shortstop Bo Bichette to a long-term deal, they have also been linked to the top free agent on the market, outfielder Kyle Tucker.
The 28-year-old is entering free agency after one season with the Chicago Cubs and is expected to command a contract that could span a decade and potentially exceed $400 million.
Tucker posted a .266 batting average, .377 on-base percentage, .841 OPS, 22 home runs and 73 RBIs over 136 games for Chicago. He helped lead the Cubs to the postseason and earned an All-Star selection for his performance during the first half of the year.
As Tucker evaluates his options, a new report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed a major development in his free agency. Not only is Tucker linked to the Blue Jays, but league executives now view Toronto as the favorite to win the Tucker sweepstakes.
“The Blue Jays, coming off their first World Series berth in more than three decades, have no plans to slow down. They are considered the favorite by other executives to land Tucker,” Passan wrote.
News in the offseason preview: Not only are the Pittsburgh Pirates going to spend this winter, they’re strongly considering giving the No. 1 prospect in baseball, 19-year-old Konnor Griffin, the opportunity to win their Opening Day shortstop job. Details: https://t.co/wCaimtSPZ9

Tucker would be a major addition for the Blue Jays, bringing elite defense, power and speed to a lineup that could benefit from a dynamic, all-around presence. He would likely slot into right field, forming a strong outfield trio with Daulton Varsho in center and Anthony Santander in left. Nathan Lukes and Davis Schneider would also remain valuable options off the bench.
Tucker being the top free agent this offseason is no surprise given everything he has accomplished in his career. Over eight seasons in the big leagues, he has earned four All-Star selections, a Gold Glove Award, two Silver Sluggers and a World Series title in 2022 during his time with the Houston Astros.
Tucker has consistently shown he can impact the game at the plate, on the basepaths and in the field. He could be the final piece Toronto needs to push them over the top in 2026.
